Website Hosting Explained – What I Help With (and What I Don’t)

Choosing the right website hosting can make a huge difference to the speed, reliability, and security of your WordPress website. It’s one of the most important parts of any website setup, yet it’s often overlooked until something goes wrong.

Website hosting server room

One thing I believe in strongly is transparency. Unlike some agencies or “all-in-one” website providers, I don’t host websites myself or lock clients into proprietary systems or long-term contracts.

Instead, I help clients choose trusted UK hosting providers and domain registrars that are suitable for their website and budget. The hosting account and domain registration are always set up in the client’s own name, giving them full ownership and control from day one.

Why Website Hosting Matters

Your hosting provider is essentially the home for your website. Good hosting can improve:

  • Website speed
  • SEO performance
  • Security
  • Reliability and uptime
  • Backup and recovery options
  • User experience
  • Scalability as your business grows

Cheap or poorly configured hosting can lead to slow loading pages, downtime, plugin conflicts, security vulnerabilities, and frustrating support experiences.

That’s why I only recommend hosting companies I trust and have experience working with.

I Don’t Host Websites Directly

I don’t operate my own hosting platform or reseller hosting service.

Instead, I work with reputable third-party hosting providers who specialise in WordPress hosting and website infrastructure.

This approach gives clients several important advantages:

  • The hosting account belongs to you
  • You retain full control of your website
  • You are free to move providers if needed
  • There are no hidden markups or lock-ins
  • Billing is completely transparent
  • You deal directly with the hosting provider for payments

I can recommend suitable hosting options, help set everything up correctly, and configure WordPress for the best possible performance, but the hosting contract itself remains between you and the hosting provider.

Domain Names Are Registered in Your Name

The same applies to domain names.

Your domain name should always be registered in your own business or personal name wherever possible. This avoids complications later and ensures you remain the legal owner of your domain.

I can:

  • Recommend domain registrars
  • Help choose suitable domain names
  • Configure DNS settings
  • Connect domains to hosting
  • Assist with migrations and transfers

However, domain registration fees and renewals remain the client’s responsibility and are paid directly to the registrar.

Email Hosting & Management

One area I intentionally do not manage is email hosting.

Email can be surprisingly complex and often requires specialist support depending on the platform being used. Rather than offering a partial service, I prefer clients to use dedicated email providers such as Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace.

I do not:

  • Set up email hosting accounts
  • Manage email inboxes
  • Provide email support
  • Troubleshoot email delivery issues
  • Manage Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace accounts

That said, I can often point clients in the right direction or advise on the best options to discuss with their IT provider or email specialist.

Why I Work This Way

This approach is designed to protect clients and give them complete ownership of their website infrastructure.

Unfortunately, many businesses discover too late that they don’t actually control their hosting, domain names, or website access because everything is tied to a single agency or provider.

I believe clients should always have:

  • Full ownership
  • Full transparency
  • Direct access to accounts
  • Freedom to move providers
  • Clear separation between services

My role is to provide expert WordPress development, support, troubleshooting, SEO improvements, and technical guidance — not to lock clients into closed systems.

Choosing the Right Hosting Provider

Not all hosting companies are equal, especially when it comes to WordPress.

The right hosting depends on factors such as:

  • Website size
  • Traffic levels
  • E-commerce requirements
  • Performance expectations
  • Budget
  • Required support levels
  • Security needs

I can help recommend practical hosting solutions based on your actual needs rather than upselling unnecessary packages.
